BOSTON — When Vertex Pharmaceuticals agreed this year to move into an as-yet-unbuilt waterfront office complex, it made history as the city’s largest commercial lease at 1.1 million square feet, with a rent of $72.5 million a year. But more important for the city over all, the huge deal has spurred growth and eased the way for financing other projects.
The Fallon Company is developing the $900 million office and laboratory complex for Vertex on Fan Pier, across Fort Point Channel a few blocks from downtown. Vertex, which is based in Cambridge, Mass., also has leased 60,000 square feet in One Marina Park Drive, an office building completed by Fallon a year ago, and has an option on a possible 300,000-square-foot building, also on Fan Pier.
When it came to selecting a partner to provide its laboratory furniture for Buildings A & B - including state of the art casework, high-performance fume hoods, shelving and specialty lab storage - Vertex weighed its options carefully, and chose New England Lab. New England Lab will work in coordination with general contractor, Turner Construction, and architect Elkus | Manfredi - providing project management as well as manufacturing and delivery of the complex lab furniture systems needed to fully furnish the newest and most ambitious lab facility in Boston. A complex variety of laboratory casework and fumehoods are being provided for "Building A", and a host of high-performance fumehoods for "Building B". Other project partners include Tsoi Kobus & Associates, Inc. and Jacobs Engineering. More information to come as we make progress on the venture.
